It’s possible to complete the official entry immigration form on paper once you arrive, or in advance through the Japan Customs Declaration app. All types of the CD form request the same information.

Complete Your Japan Customs Declaration Form
Here’s our detailed guide on how to get your Japan entry form online, with example images of our application page to help you fill out each section confidently.
Step 1
Fill out your personal information
Register your personal information to get started. Make sure that your name appears exactly as it does on your passport.
Step 2
Add your passport data and contact details
Fill out your passport details carefully. It’s important to use an email address that’s active, and can be accessed easily. This is where you’ll receive your approved QR code
Reminder: Your passport must be valid for at least the length of your stay in Japan to comply with local entry requirements.
Step 3
Provide your travel itinerary for Japan
Give the details of your trip, including flight information, and your reason for visiting Japan.
Step 4
Make your Customs Declaration
Answer the questions about the items you’ll be carrying on your person, or in your hand and hold luggage.

Step 5
Pay the Japan CD processing fee
Once you’ve filled out each section, make the service fee payment to submit your request. Check the icons to see which types of credit and debit card are accepted.
Step 6
Get your approved Customs Declaration QR code
You’ll get a response by email within 72 hours. If approved, you’ll receive a Japan Customs Declaration in PDF format with a QR code. There’s no need to download a Japan Customs Declaration app to show the QR code at customs.
Simply save or download the QR code for your Japan customs form on your mobile device, so that you can easily access it. Alternatively, you can print a copy and bring it with you when you travel.
Step 7
Pass through customs controls in Japan
Once you’ve arrived in Japan, you must pass through Japanese customs and immigration controls. You’ll be prompted to show your passport and visa, if necessary.
At this time, you can show your approved Customs Declaration QR code to a customs officer. At some airports, you’ll pass through an e-Gate, where you must scan your passport and QR code.
The following airports allow you to complete the e-Gate process while waiting for your hold luggage to appear on the carousel: Naha Airport (OKA) in Okinawa, Haneda Airport (HND) in Tokyo, and Fukuoka Airport (FUK).
Even though your Japan CD has been accepted by the online system, customs officers may still ask to inspect your luggage.
Once you’ve passed through customs controls, you can leave the airport and enjoy your trip to Japan.
Japanese Customs Rules and Limits
Customs rules for Japan apply to all passengers arriving in the country. You can bring personal effects, professional equipment and any household goods for use during your stay, duty-free. For personal items, the duty free allowance is 10,000 yen (USD 65) per product.
There are some limitations on certain items. You can bring the following products without paying duty tax in restricted quantities:

Exemptions and important customs information for Japan
Here are some important regulations to be aware of when passing through Japanese customs controls:
- Some permitted duty-free quantities of restricted items do not apply to travelers under the age of 20. They must pay duty tax on all tobacco and alcohol products.
- Brand new items or those brought as gifts may incur duty tax if they have a value of more than 200,000 yen. This is equivalent to around USD 1,250.
- Children aged 5 and under may only carry items for their personal use through customs controls.
- Leather handbags and golf bags may be subject to duty tax of up to 15%.
If you are required to pay tax, Japanese customs officials will inform you how much is due and how to make the payment.
How do I declare items on my Japanese customs form?
When filling out your online Customs Declaration form, you’ll be asked about restricted items you’re carrying into Japan.
Simply select ‘yes’ if you’re carrying any of the items in quantities above the approved limit.
